SHERRILL, N.Y. - The Sherrill Silversmiths will feature a 26-man roster from 20 different colleges in the long-awaited 2021 season, which is set to begin Monday, June 7. This year’s lineup includes a pair of returning Smitties - Sherrill natives Connor and Blake VanDreason, both of SUNY Oswego.
Third-year Silversmith Connor VanDreason will look to lead a deep pitching staff, which features 10 right-handers and two southpaws. Zach Silfies comes to Sherrill after a strong sophomore campaign at Elizabethtown College. He garnered three wins to help lead the Blue Jays to the conference championship series. Also look for Andrew Sears of Rhode Island College to make major contributions. He struck out 51 batters for the Anchormen in 2021 and reached double-digit K’s on two occasions.
Cole Palmeri, Sean Lynch, Dylan Pohl, and Jared Rhodes will share duties behind the plate. Palmeri batted .265 as a freshman at Colby College with eight RBIs and a pair of doubles. Lynch posted a .426 average and 19 RBIs in his first season at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
Manning the infield will be returner Blake VanDreason along with fellow local Tyler Rotach, who currently attends Onondaga Community College. VanDreason batted .250 with 14 RBIs and two homers for the Smitties in 2019. Brady O’Brien compiled an impressive .368 average and 13 RBIs in his first season at Colby College. Molloy College product Chris Einemann tallied nine hits, including two doubles, in just 19 at-bats in his freshman campaign.
The outfield will feature Yale University sophomore Ben Metzner. He’s yet to make an appearance for the Bulldogs due to the cancellation of two seasons, but looks to be a strong presence in the Smitties’ lineup. Josh Bein (Swarthmore College), Joseph Comins (Misericordia College), and Simeon Downing (Whitman College) all recently wrapped up strong seasons to round out the Sherrill outfield.
Leading the talented roster will be current SUNY Oneonta head baseball coach, Sherrill’s own Ben Grimm.
