Silversmiths Name Ben Grimm Manager

By: | December 03, 2020

SHERRILL, NY – December 3, 2020 – The Sherrill Silversmiths today announced that they have named Ben Grimm as the team’s Manager. Grimm, in his 10th year as the Head Baseball Coach at SUNY Oneonta, is a co-founder of the Silversmiths and returns to Sherrill for his second stint as Manager of the Silversmiths.

President Dennis Duffy and Vice President Mike Sherlock made the announcement.

“To say I’m excited to return to the dugout at Noyes Park in 2021 representing the Silversmiths is an understatement,” Grimm said. “Sherrill will always be home to me and I have so many great memories as a player and coach from my time growing up in Sherrill and in the Silversmiths dugout. It truly is a special place to me. To be in a position to be able to come back and help continue to build a high-level baseball experience for the Sherrill community, fans, players, and coaches is something that I have wanted for years. I will work hard to make it the best experience possible for all. I’m also incredibly proud of the growth of the franchise in the last few years under Dennis Duffy and Mike Sherlock. These two should get all the credit for where the franchise currently is and the direction it is heading. Hopefully, at the end of the summer we can say we put a quality team on the field, that earned a playoff berth, had a lot of fun being a part of the Sherrill community, and really got after it all summer.”

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Ben Grimm back home and into the Smitties dugout for the 2021 NYCBL season,” said Duffy and Sherlock. “Ben is a high character person who has been a coach and mentor to both of us since we became part of the Silversmiths family as players in the Summer of 2009. He has a consistent track record of success at this level, is an exceptional leader, and is one of the most talented coaches in the area that will develop our players both on and off the field. We can’t overstate the positive influence Ben brings to the Sherrill organization. Since we came into our current position on the Board of Directors in 2016, it has been a hope of ours to get Ben back to Sherrill as Manager of the Silversmiths. We feel fortunate to have the original Silversmith back in the Noyes Park dugout donning a Silversmiths uniform. Welcome back to the Smitties Ben, Meg, Ellie, and Maddox!”

A native of Sherrill, NY, Grimm has had one player selected in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft and twelve players sign or be offered professional contracts, coached five All-New York Region performers, SUNYAC Pitcher of the Year, a D3 All-American, nine ECBL All Stars, three NYCBL All-Stars, one All-NYCBL selection, and the NYCBL record holder for stolen bases in a season (62). During his previous stint as Silversmiths Manager, Grimm led the team to the now defunct ECBL Championship Series and played a pivotal role in the ECBL merging into the NYCBL. His teams at SUNY Oneonta have also been honored for five straight years for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award in recognition of a team GPA over 3.0 for the entire school year in addition to numerous other individual academic accolades.

Grimm served as the Silversmiths Manager from 2009 through 2012 and as the organizations President from 2009 through 2013.

Along the way, Grimm has made stops at Hamilton College as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator (2011), Davis & Elkins College in Elkins, WV as the Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator (2008-2010), Assistant Coach with the Haymarket Senators of the Valley League (2008), and Cazenovia College as the Pitching Coach (2007). Ben was a member of the NYCBL’s Mohawk Valley Cobras in 2003.

Grimm is a Graduate of West Virginia University (2010) with a M.S. Degree in Athletic Coaching Education, and in 2006 received his B.S. in Recreation Tourism Management from Concord University in Athens, WV.

Born and raised in Sherrill, NY, Ben is a 2001 graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School where he lettered in Baseball and Basketball. During the summer Ben was a member of the local Sherrill Post 230 Legion Baseball Team.

Ben currently resides in Bainbridge with his wife Megan, and their two children Ellie and Maddox.
