SHERRILL, N.Y. – The Sherrill Silversmiths erased a five-run deficit and eventually took a 7-6 lead through the middle innings, but the first-place Hornell Dodgers responded down the stretch and pulled away late for a 13-8 victory in a slugfest Friday afternoon at Noyes Park.
With the loss, Sherrill moves to 3-2 on the season. Hornell, meanwhile, remains unbeaten as it improves to 6-0 with the win.
Hornell used the long ball to jump out to an early lead as Connor Bailey (Williamette) sparked the offense with a pair of two-run homers in his first two at-bats. Colin Johnson (Alfred State) extended the Dodger lead to 5-0 with a solo jack in the fourth and Chris Cerniglia made it 6-1 with an RBI single in the fifth.
Sherrill roared back in the home half of the fifth, scoring six runs on five hits to take the lead. Nicholas Wydler (Ave Maria) worked a walk before back-to-back singles by Joshua Goldstein (Southern New Hampshire) and Tully Allen (Ave Maria) loaded the bases. Kingsley Ballao (San Jacinto College North) got the Silversmiths on the board with a two-RBI double to right-center, before Michael Wroth (American International College) reached on a throwing error that allowed two more runs to score. With Wroth on second, Jake Coro (Southern New Hampshire) put the Silversmiths in the lead, 7-6, with a towering two-run shot over the wall in right field.
The Silversmiths’ lead was brief, however, as the Dodgers responded with three runs – all with two outs -- in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back strikeouts opened the frame, Hornell strung together three straight singles with Bailey’s base hit tying the game. Cerniglia followed with a bases-loaded walk and Johnson was hit by a pitch one batter later to give the Dodgers a 9-7 lead.
Hornell never lost grasp of its lead this time, tacking on four insurance runs in the top of the ninth to secure the 13-8 victory.
Ballao and Coro paced the Silversmiths’ offense, combining for six RBIs and three runs scored. Alex Gomes (Southern New Hampshire) started on the mound for Sherrill but did not factor in the decision after allowing six earned runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Brett Sandford (Hamilton) saddled the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits in one inning of relief.
Bailey led the Dodgers offensively with five RBIs, while Jared Kapturaski (Mercyhurst) went 3-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Matt Mulhearn (Webster) earned the win, tossing seven innings while allowing eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Jake Miller (SUNY Brockport) pitched the final two scoreless innings in the win for the Dodgers.
Sherrill will return to action on Saturday when it travels to Olean for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Oilers at Bradner Stadium.
